Who we are
Simon and Jen David are the founders and inspiration behind the Kambia District Foundation. Jen has worked for many years as a nurse in Africa, but mainly in Sierra Leone. Simon and Jen have fallen in love with the country and its people and are constantly looking for ways to aid the community as a whole and particularly the education of children.
In 2016 Jen was contacted by Mohamed Kamara, a Surgical Community Health Officer who was looking for support to build a primary school in his village Masama. Jen and Mohamed had worked together for many years at the Kambia Government Hospital, teaching and training staff there so this was a local professional well known and well trusted.
Simon and Jen had always discussed wanting to make a positive contribution to Kambia in some way, so were only too pleased to offer their support. As a result of their personal investment into the project, the Simon Jen Primary School Masama was opened in September 2017. Not only was this the first school in the village for over 100 years but most importantly around 80% of the primary age children in the area are now receiving free education, when previously it had been around 13%. It now offers free education to over 500 children from the surrounding area.
In 2018 we commenced work on a new secondary science academy in Bayande, a village around 20 miles from Kambia. Work has now been completed and around 400 children are now being educated to a high standard.
What we do
We are now continuing with our vision to improve education and health and having now completed both a primary and secondary school, we are planning to commence our nursery school project in Masama during 2023. This will be constructed within the grounds of our existing primary school and it is hoped that we can educate a high number of pre-school children between the ages of 3 and 5.
