Bayande Science Academy
Having successfully completed the build of a primary school in Masama, during 2018 we embarked on an ambitious plan to construct a new secondary science academy in Bayande, a small village some 20 miles from Kambia Town. We became involved in this project once we were advised that the school had lost the land that they were previously occupying. As soon as the village elders had donated some new land for construction, the community agreed to provide as much labour as possible to facilitate the build. We donated the materials for the buildings as well as paying for specialist contractors where applicable.
It is also worth noting that this is perhaps the only educational establishment in Sierra Leone that has been constructed using a vented roofing system designed by Dan Jones of Orange Home Construction. Initial findings have proved to be very positive with a much more comfortable temperature being enjoyed within the buildings as a whole.
The construction has now been completed and was opened in September 2020. We anticipate that in due course this will provide free education for around 750 pupils living in the surrounding area.
It was great to visit the school in January 2023 and to see it being used for the first time. As well as the usual ceremonial greeting from the community we managed to also put up some blackboards that had been kindly donated. There are around 300 children now on the roll and the school is growing all the time.
